Closing the Stables for building development

The Stables, which is situated in Camden, is due to close down to make space for yet another building development. It is an important part of Camden market and there have been many protests about the proposed changes .The Stables used to be a Horse Hospital and has been around for many years. It certainly seems to catch everyone’s attention, with its huge stone arch and beautiful architecture.

So why develop it now?

There is much debate, especially amongst locals, about what they are going to do to it but not many people know the exact details. There are rumours that Topshop, H&M and Starbucks are coming in to replace the existing local traders which is causing angriness and protest. I think, living in the local area myself, that this is very understandable because the Stables is supposed to be a market and if all the colourful stalls vanish, then it will cease to be a market and start being more of a shopping centre. There is also the question about tourists. They come from far and wide to see the great Camden Market. Would they want to come all the way to London to see another shopping centre?

It is almost definitely going to turn into two new four storey buildings that will house shops, offices and cafes. Also, the beautiful brick roof will be reconstructed into glass and a new parking space is going to be installed. The traders are particularly angry about the reconstruction because they are going to have to pack up their stalls/shops and move elsewhere. Kareem Khodeir, who sells furniture and art, is shutting up his shop and moving to Spain. He said: “I went through all this with Greenwich market and I lost everything – my house, my car. I managed to delay the developers and even got a thank you from the Queen. Then I came to Camden and the same thing’s happening again so I’m off to Spain.”
Kareem’s frustration is reflective of most of the traders in the market and also some of the people who are regular visitors to the market.

Please write in what you think about this issue. We are very interested to hear your opinion.
